It’s no surprise that there is always a population of walleye that will live in the weeds. However, these weeds change and get taller throughout the summer, forcing you to change how you target them. The biggest change you can make is throwing baits that run shallow.

One example is using big soft plastics. These plastics will swim higher in the water column which allows your lure to go over the tops of the weeds. Another example is using shallow running crank baits. Use cranks that run only 1-3 feet down. The fish will come up out of the weeds to get them.

Targeting weed walleye in mid to late summer also means focusing on the conditions. If you have high sun and clear water, the fish might be buried down deep in the weeds. However, if you get overcast with a little wind, that chop will stain the water and cause the fish to move around more. Keep in mind, cloudy days are going to be your best bet for fishing clear water.

Even if it’s 10-13 feet of water, don’t be afraid to throw a bait that’s only running 2-3 feet down. Fish will come up to eat it.
