During fall, leopard frogs will migrate back to marshes and sloughs to hibernate. Keying in on this “frog migration,” is a phenomenal way to target walleye, especially on shallow dish bowl lakes.
One of Jason Mitchell’s favorite locations for targeting walleye with this presentation is finding where a marsh or slough touches the edge of the main lake. Out in front of that outside lip is where the frogs and walleyes congregate. Patterns in these locations are pretty shallow and often under 8′ of water. When rigging frogs, Jason uses a short snell live bait rig with a 1/0 hook or a long shank soft plastic jig hook.
From the middle of October and on, this presentation gets better and better. It is a fun way to catch a walleye and something to look for this fall.
