Safety & Things to Think About
When it comes to boating, there are also items you need to always have/wear for safety. These include:
- Life jackets (some states/provinces require these be worn at all times, pay attention to your local regulations). Regardless, you should always have one available for every person on board.
- Throwable flotation device (required by some states)
- Wear your boat motor kill switch when going high speeds
- Have a fire extinguisher in your boat
- When boating alone, let someone know where you are going and when you will be back
Additionally, nothing will make you a better, safer boater than practice. Put in the time and when fishing with other people, ask to take the reins to learn. It does take time, but after a few practice sessions you will build your confidence quickly and become a master in no time.
