If there’s one thing that’s going to greatly enhance your boat control, it’s adding an external antenna to your GPS unit. All GPS units today have an internal antenna, so you don’t need an external antenna to navigate. However, adding an external antenna can greatly speed up the feedback on your orientation.
So, whatever direction your boat is facing, you’ll get that information back more immediately and your map will turn faster.
External antennas shine when you’re trying to figure out your exact bearing or heading to determine where to push ahead on the smallest pieces of structure and tight contour lines. Compared to a lot of other things on your boat, external antennas are probably one of the cheapest things you can add to greatly enhance your boat control.
