WALLEYE:

Morning is KEY right now, and the afternoon is a grind. Except for a unique midday bite. (more on that later)

The bite is on fire up shallow in 3-8ft in the mornings. The water is gradually rising, yet some green vegetation is up in the shallows. Focus your time fishing back in the bays with bottom bouncers and spinners. No specific color or weight makes a difference, as these fish are hungry. Guys trolling planer boards with shad-imitating crankbaits also produce fish. Still, you must run your boards out and up shallow, which can sometimes be challenging. Once schools of fish are located, make hay quick as they are on the move. Here today, gone tomorrow, seems to be the adage as schools have not congregated in the same spot day after day. So, continually moving and observing your electronics is essential for staying on fish.

Once that midday sun hits the shallow water, bite comes to a screeching halt. Yet, there is an excellent BIG fish bite in 15-35 feet of water for patient anglers. Guys are catching close to a dozen walleye over 29 inches in a given day using Jigging Raps in combination with forward-facing sonar. These fish are a real challenge as they seem to only nip at the baits, so it takes a delicate hand to have the correct placement and to work the bait to get bites. The best big fish area has been around Swan Creek, but heading north beyond 212 all the way to the State line provides a lot of the same deep points that hold fish. That said, only some points have these fish, so be diligent and use electronics to find them before dropping lines down.
