June Fishing in July!
Views of a red sun usually mean we have smoke in the air, and that’s usually related to a mid summer bite. With a blast of hot air for 2 weeks, one would expect our surface temps to consistently hold at 71F or warmer during the day. With the extremely cold and rainy June that northern Manitoba experienced this year, focus spots are very different at the moment. Typically by now we have walleye congregated in deep water, and any shelf or deep mid water hump will have fish cruising all day long. However, last week to present, the pods of fish that should be deeper are still holding to those June spots. Weedlines 12-14’ and shallow humps are holding a ton of fish right now, especially when they have some chop blowing over them. It’s a fishermen’s schmorgishboard out there, as whatever style you have confidence, you will do well. Jigging with bait, tossing flukes or paddle tails, crank baits, bottom bouncing with spinners, or snap jigging rap styles baits are all productive right now. There really is no wrong technique, confidence in your fishing skills is all that’s needed.
But also remember that fish are starting to stage on those deeper reefs and drop offs of 22’ range, and some in 28’. At some point the great migration of fish will push into the depths, but for now it’s a free for all! With the main lake bodies still being unseasonably cold with a thin layer of warmer surface water, there is no telling how long we will have June into July- but one thing is for sure there is no complaints here!
