This season on Lake Winnipeg, anglers have been noticing walleye are either holding tight to the bottom or cruising just two to four feet under the ice. With traditional flashers, you won’t be able to see those higher suspended fish until it’s almost too late to get your bait up in front of them. Having the right sonar is huge to be able to notice these fish before they’re underneath you.
If you can get your bait in front of these suspended walleye as they’re coming through, you’ll be able to trigger interest and likely a reaction strike. Using a downward view on live sonar (e.g. Garmin Livescope) will allow you to see these high flying fish coming from the sides and give you just enough time to reel up to get your bait in front of them.
The next time you’re out ice fishing Lake Winnipeg, make sure to pay close attention to your electronics and don’t be afraid to target those high, suspended fish because those are, more often than not, the big ones that can change your trip.
