The most important factor to consider when river fishing is current and flow. If you’re in a river that doesn’t have a lot of flow due to low water levels, some of the best areas to look for are anything that is manmade current like warm water discharges or outtake and outflow areas. When you find these areas, setup right on the edge of the current so you can either pitch into the faster moving current or out on the current break seam where the fish might be sitting in the slack water at the edge. In the fall, walleye relate to these areas following baitfish.
If you’re fishing the river in the fall for walleye and having trouble finding fish in low current conditions, try finding a manmade discharge and a lot of times you’ll find a lot of walleyes up in the current.
